A change of character.

I'm pretty much a dude. When I was a kid, I didn't want to have anything to do with the My Little Ponies, Polly Pockets, or Barbies. Instead, I was spinning on my butt, pretending to be Michelangelo from "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." When my friends and I used to play He-Man, I was always the man himself. I don't listen to Katy Perry or Lady Gaga- I rock out to Scorpions, Ratt, Whitesnake, and Def Leppard (yeah, all great 80's hair metal bands have to have an animal in the name).

So basically, I have never considered myself to be very feminine. I may look kinda girly, but I have always thought of myself as a rough, masculine kind of person rather than a gentle, delicate girly girl.

I am also a cheap bastard. Anyone who knows me knows that I pinch every penny. I go to the "free stuff" websites and squeal when my trial-sized tubes of toothpaste, mini boxes of cereal, or packets of Metamucil come in the mail. I clip coupons and I use them. I don't buy things unless they're on sale. I'm basically an 80-year-old Jewish grandma in the body of a 24-year-old.
So it really shocked me about a month ago when I fell in love. With a purse.

I was writing an article for work entitled "Fun Spring Accessories" that required me to scour the internet for...well...fun spring accessories. I went over to the Ann Taylor site (God knows why- I have never shopped there and I don't feel quite old enough to start) and clicked on "handbags and belts," hoping that I could find a great belt to add to the collection. But that's when I saw it. Right in the middle of the page. Shining and beautiful. This gorgeous purse:
It was immediately the most beautiful thing I had ever seen and fell deeply, madly, passionately in love.

Oh, and it was $198. I have NEVER spent more than $60 on a purse and I don't think I've ever spent more than $100 on any item of clothing before (besides maybe a prom dress or something). I couldn't justify buying it. So instead, I told everyone I knew about it. I visited it every day in its home on the Ann Taylor website. I admired it. I dreamt of touching its soft leathery goodness. And I futilely put it on my birthday list, knowing that nobody would get it for me.

When my birthday came, my boyfriend gave me my presents. No purse. My grandparents gave me my presents. No bag. My parents gave me my presents. Still no bag.

A few hours after I had opened my presents from my parents, my mom left the room and came back saying, "oops, I forgot one present!" You all know what happens next.

So now I am the owner of a girly, expensive bag and I have never been prouder. But I wonder if this signifies some sort of change in me. Will I start spending more on clothes? Will I start caring more about accessories and hair and makeup and clothes? Or is this just one momentary lapse in character? All I know is that I feel like a million bucks, so I don't care. I am a little concerned, however, that my new best friend is now a purse.

And her name is Henrietta...

I'm so proud of you for falling in love with a purse. if you ask me it is 100% normal to have a purse as a best friend. My shoes are my best friends.

PS-The purse is REALLY pretty!

Hey, it's hard work being cheap. Finding the best deals, clipping coupons, digging through crap at thrift stores - my hat's off to you. And Henrietta is beautiful!

Haha, I was the kid with all of the Ninja Turtle Action figures too! LOL, I was more one of the guys than a girlie-girl, but lately I've started to embrace that in myself.

I only like expensive/designer things when others buy them for me or I somehow win them. A beautiful, classic purse is a good thing to have as a best friend though.

Also, this reminded me of this post by SFTC. She has a purse best friend too!

I love that you named your purse! Henrietta is a great name for that beauty. I have a purse obsession. I literally have bins and bins of purses at home. Do you think I ever reuse them? NOPE! I find the next best purse that I just have to have and buy that instead. Yet I can't part with all those old purses. It's an illness.

Congrats on entering the world of the girly girl, even if your stay is brief, I hope it's fun!! ;-)

You did well - you didn't actually pay for it!

...and you remind me of that Progressive Insurance ad with Kate and Josh where he is carrying a purse... but they call it a european shoulder bag instead to make it sound more 'manly'.

Come on, you know we all fall off the wagon from time to time...don't feel too bad. I am glad to know that you were not a girly girl when young because i wasn't too. My childhood interests were uncannily similar to what you have listed.

Gorgeous purse!!

I just bought my first (and probably last) expensive purse a few months ago... with my first paycheck from my first real job.

It's Nine West and it cost $150, but I use it every day! And I get lots of compliments... I have to realize that my worth is not based on owning cute things haha.

I say that if you didn't pay for, you're winning in the world! Besides, you can't suppress all femininity.

I was once a dude too and now a girly girl. LOL. Actually my feminine side was hidden somewhere in me and just bloomed one day after my 21 birthday. I do still shouts and scream like a boy when I watch sports and I have the same "I don't care" attitude, but I'm definitely a woman now with love for purse, makeup and cute dresses..

I'm not a girly-girl, either, plus I'm a cheapskate to boot. But I do have a couple of pairs of nice shoes, a few nice purses, and one signature piece of jewelry. When you have something of great quality you love that will last a long time, well, that's better than a $10 purse bought at WalMart that falls apart within a few months. What you have is an investment in a piece that will last...plus, you like it. :-)

I don't think there is anything strange about a rough-and-tumble girl liking to look good. I think you can definitely be both.

I think any 80 yr. old Jewish grandmother would be proud to carry that bag. :)

i know the feeling. The flutter, the excitement, the sense of pride you get from taking your purse out, how good she is to you. Congrats, may you have many more loves like this :)

That is a great bag!

I think we all go in phases as to what we like and what we don't. But this purse is timeless so you can carry it even when you are hanging out with the dudes...or at a Huey Lewis concert.

I heard about this purse a million times before your birthday and I am so glad to have finally seen it!

You've named her...you're officially heading down the fashionista path! ah ha ha. Gorgeous bag!
